Edwards Lifesciences Senior Manager, Global Privacy Counsel in Irvine, California

The Sr. Manager, Global Privacy Counsel reports to the Chief Privacy Officer and is a subject matter expert who will have responsibility to help support and manage the Edwards Global Privacy program across the entire organization. The Senior Manager has moderate oversight of the further enhancement of the company’s global privacy program. It requires subject matter guidance and support to Edwards’ business functions on privacy and data protection, including various stages of product development. It requires ongoing support and enhancement of the company’s privacy program, and training for relevant stakeholders. The successful candidate will deploy knowledge of the company’s business and collaborate with various levels of leadership to facilitate the business objectives of Edwards by providing practical, timely and effective legal counsel, while minimizing potential legal risks.

Workplace Designation: Given the collaborative and complex nature of this work, this role is in person full time in Irvine, California.

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Manage and enhance the Edwards Global Privacy program to be effective, practical, patient-focused, and sustainable, based on an appropriate assessment of Edwards privacy risks, and provide subject matter expertise and appropriate guidance on identification and implementation of measures to comply with all privacy and data protection laws and regulations globally.

  • Analyze privacy issues and provide broad perspective.

  • Familiarity and experience with global privacy laws, rules and regulations – experience in Europe, Asia and Latin America preferred.

  • Work closely with in-house counsel in international jurisdictions.

  • Day-to-day management of privacy issues impacting Edwards operations globally, including monitoring of legislative developments.

  • Close collaboration with Data Governance and IT Security functions.

  • Oversight of key provisions in all contracts to assure compliance with privacy and data protection requirements.

  • Ensures provisions made in contracts are compliant with privacy and data protection requirements.

  • Assessment of Data Subject Requests under various laws and regulations.

  • Identifying training needs among business stakeholders and developing / presenting training and education regarding privacy requirements and developments.

  • Working in close cooperation with other in-house counsel to coordinate and streamline efforts for global efficiency.

  • Primarily accountable for specific projects and/or client groups on matters of moderate complexity (can vary)

  • Developing a thorough understanding of and familiarity with Edwards’ business, its people, products, markets, facilities, customers, and competitors and use this knowledge in providing guidance and counsel to Edwards business partners.

  • Coordinating with and managing external counsel as required.

  • Performing special assignments or projects if necessary, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What you'll need (Required):

  • Licensed and admitted to practice law in California or licensed in another US state and eligible as Registered In-House Counsel with California State Bar

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in Global privacy and data protection requirements outside the US, including GDPR and country-level requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to gain the trust of and form solid relationships with business partners in various functions as well as Legal Department colleagues

  • At least 4-7 years of related experience in a top tier law firm, in a Privacy role and/or as in-house counsel

  • Decision-making ability and experience

  • Problem-solver – able to find practical solutions and provide practical guidance

  • Accountable and hands-on, self-starter, results oriented

  • Desire to deeply understand products and business

  • Able to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously

What else we look for (Preferred):

  • Highly Preferred: IAPP certification, CIPP-E or CIPP-A

  • Familiarity and experience with artificial intelligence governance

  • Familiarity with medical device or pharmaceutical industry

  • Excellent analytical, detail-oriented, organized and information seeking skills

  • Excellent organization and time management skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of objectives

  • Deep understanding of related aspects of legal processes and/or systems

  • Strict attention to detail

  • Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels and proactively escalate issues to appropriate levels of management in the organization

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to represent the privacy function on initiatives within multiple area or campaigns, interfacing with project managers, legal team, and other relevant stakeholders

  • Ability to consult in large program setting within multiple areas or campaigns, deeper or more dedicated technical advisory role, interfacing with various levels of leadership, including executive leadership

  • Ability to provide broad/strategic leadership to outsourcing partners on a directive level, participates on large scale RFP

  • Adhere to all EHS rules and requirements and take adequate control measures in preventing injuries to themselves and others as well as to the protection of environment and prevention of pollution under their span of influence/control

For California, the base pay range for this position is $128,000 to $181,000(highly experienced).

The pay for the successful candidate will depend on various factors (e.g., qualifications, education, prior experience).
